SOARING WITH STYLE
You imagine yourself in another world as soon as you enter the entrance at the Rokin. All walls are covered with a colorful collection of black-and-white photographs with 'Amsterdam' as their theme. It looks a bit like a gallery or museum. Cris van Amsterdam pulled out all the stops to realize this cinematic environment. His ideal was a translation of a lift he once boarded in Paris. An open structure with cast iron fencing. The regulations forced him to install a modern glass elevator shaft and pack it with steel, which in the combination yields an astonishing result.
You play a role in a black and white film as you step into the elevator
A thin, concrete 'mouse trap' turns up around the elevator. The solid wood front doors of the various apartments provide a nice contrast. The doors are finished with ornamental ironwork and glass and lead windows. The marble floors finish it off completely. What used to be a subdued and somewhat dull rise, Cris has renamed an entrance with international allure and a touch of Paris.
